Some of the images are big. I had just learned how to use a scanner.
Noah (?) and Murry setting up before the show. One of my favorite
photos.
Ken, Philip (yes, a picture of Philip!), Rhett, and Murry
Similarly: Ken, Philip, Rhett and Murry.
Rhett (supplicating?) and Murry.
I took my favorite 80-200 mm zoom lens and put it to work on Murry.
And for those of you who wanted a close up of Rhett ...
This is my absolute favorite picture of Ken Bethea.
More of Murry.
This is also one of my favorites from that afternoon.
Hey, I almost got Murry to smile!
You can see the "stage" built by the Student Union at Southwestern.
We were all sitting on the grass quad in front of them.
This one kinda sucks, but hey, you can see Philip.
Another one of Murry in his "John Lennon" sunglasses.
Rhett, Philip and Murry are proud to be Texans.
The Southwestern University show was really a treat. It was a gorgeous day. We all just spread out on the grass lawn. Murry brought one of the sweetest puppies I have ever met (the new owner was supposed to pick it up after the show). For once, there were more girls flocked around Murry than around Rhett because of this puppy. There were only about 100 students at the show, giving it a very relaxed atmosphere. As the sun set, it became unusually chilly for April. They finished with "Timebomb", but a guy convinced them to play "Four Leaf Clover". Everyone stood up, jumped around and had a good time.
As a photographer, this was a very unique setting. I had no "crowd" to contend with most of the time. I was usually the only one standing and could walk to any angle. Until the last songs, everyone remained about 10 feet away from the stage base, giving me an extremely clear area to shoot. If you ever want to photograph bands, try to find a small, ticketless show at a University or College. I encountered similar situations when the Mighty Mighty Bosstones played at Middlebury College in Vermont and when the Squirrel Nut Zippers played at the University of Vermont.
